Bookcases An individual vision of a place to store "books" Why let the contents dominate the storage when you could have a piece of sculpture. The first bookcase that broke the mould for me was No1. based on wind and trees, The first sketch ideas were very naive with branches of trees with shelves balancing on branches etc. As I began to design within the types of production methods that I discovered that I was producing new forms. Instead of storing the books on horizontal on long shelves, I have produced a series of bookcases where the books are put together in sizes in vertical units. The use of narrow tall cupboards has given me scope to create more three dimensional forms, Picture No7 and 8 where based a theme rocks.
In other ideas I have used colour boxes to form the structure for holding more straight forward horizontal shelves. When we think of a bookcase, we envisage a system of shelves as one might find in a Library. I have always found this utilitarian aspect of design fine if the only function is storage. I believe unless the function is completely invisible what ever exist is making some visual statement. |
